VES nominees!

4 nominations for Inception, which rules the roost with the Visual Effects Society. Deservedly so.

Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual-Effects Driven Feature Motion Picture
“Inception” Here's your winner
“Iron Man 2″
“TRON Legacy”
“Alice In Wonderland”
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I”

These five are the expected Oscar nominees. Inception's Chris Corbould, Paul Franklin, and company are likely to end up on stage with Oscar in hand on the big night.

I must say, I'm disheartened by the complete omission of Scott Pilgrim (not a single nomination!), but pleased to see the effects artists of Legend of the Guardians were tossed a few bones in the animated categories.

See the many other categories (and my geeky thoughts on who should win each one) after the cut.

Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture
“Green Zone"
“Salt”
“Hereafter”
“Black Swan” Deserves to win for its eerie and subtly chilling mirror tricks.
“Robin Hood”

Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
“Tangled”
“How to Train Your Dragon”
“Toy Story 3”
“Shrek Forever After”
“Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” Gorgeous from top to bottom.

Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture
“Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” – Kitty Galore
“The Chronicles Of Narnia: Voyage Of The Dawn Treader” – Reepicheep
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I” – Dobby
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I” – Kreacher Weak category, but I'll say Kreacher should win.

Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
“Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” – Digger
“How to Train Your Dragon” – Toothless
“Megamind” – Minion
“Tangled” – Rapunzel The character animation was perfect for every character, but all that hair makes this an especially deserving feat.

Outstanding Effects Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
“Shrek Forever After”
“How to Train Your Dragon”
“Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” Should be up for the Oscar.
“Toy Story 3″

Outstanding Created Environment in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture
“Iron Man 2″ – Stark Expo
“TRON Legacy” – Disc Game
“Inception” – Paris Dreamscape Aught to win. So surreal but convincing.
“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” – Sand Room

Outstanding Models & Miniatures in a Feature Motion Picture
“Shutter Island” – Ward-C Int./Ext. Lighthouse Int./Ext. Fits just right with the creepy production design.
“Iron Man 2” – Hammer Military Drones
“The Expendables” – The Palace Explodes
“Inception” – Hospital Fortress Destruction

Outstanding Compositing in a Feature Motion Picture
“TRON Legacy”
“Alice In Wonderland” – Stolen Tarts
“Inception”
“Hereafter” – Tsunami Sequence
If compositing is done well, I shouldn't be able to notice, so I'm not sure who should win this one.
