The Producers Guild of America listed their nominees today for Outstanding Feature Production. They mostly followed the status quo, save for the audacious inclusion of Deadpool.
Even by 'token blockbuster' standards, Deadpool's persistent presence thus far this season has been surprising. Chalk it up in part to the Critics Choice Awards turning themselves into the Ryan Reynolds show, followed by its finalist status on the Best Makeup shortlist. But this nomination from the PGA is not all that surprising. They usually reserve one slot for a box office movie.
The ten are:
Arrival
Deadpool
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight
As to which of these will cross over to an Oscar nomination, the only locks are Manchester, Moonlight and La La Land. We can assume the smart-mouthed Marvel moneymaker won't hold the same appeal to the Academy, but it might not be the only one here that slips off the ballot in favour of something the PGA hasn't recognized (might Florence Foster Jenkins be the sleeper?).
On the animated side of things, the three presumed locks of Zootopia, Moana and Kubo all scored, joined by Finding Dory and The Secret Life of Pets. The PGA has traditionally been resistant to foreign animation, so don't count out any of those -- There's a lot of them angling for a nod this year.
