Nest up on my list of favourite musical accomplishments of the year:
My selections for Best Adapted Score.
LOVE & MERCY (Atticus Ross)
Remixes and contorting the music Brian Wilson just barely within earshot of
recognition, making for a truly unique, inventive, narratively
significant soundtrack.
PITCH PERFECT 2 (Sarah Webster, Ed Boyer, Deke Sharon, Alana Da Fonseca)
Not reinventing the wheel by any stretch, but just like its predecessor,
the a Capella arrangements are a joy to listen to, to the point where
they've become the real attraction of the franchise.
RICKI AND THE FLASH (Ricki and the Flash)
These generous and jaunty rock covers – all of which were performed live for
the camera by Streep and her Flash band mates – are a real treat. Worth
the price of admission for the music alone.
Other considerations:
*The Last Five Years (Lawrence Manchester)
Straight Outta Compton (The Underdogs, Jojo Villanueva)
Tangerine (Matthew Smith)
*For record, The Last Five Years
is by far my favourite movie soundtrack of the year, but I couldn't
bring myself to nominate here because the music is barely adapted; The
arrangements are nearly identical in fact to the original off-Broadway
recording.
