So yeah, like everyone else on the net, I'll be live-blogging the Golden Globes when they begin in about three and a half hours time. Check back for updates throughout the evening.
7:33 - Usual banter on the red carpet. The women look cold. Apparently it's chilly out on the West coast tonight.
7:53 - Got my laptop. Got my port. Let's get this party started.
7:55 - Shameless Quartet plug by Dustin Hoffman. Supose I shouldn't prejudge (but I heard it's awful).
8:04 - "When it comes to torture, I trust the women who spent three years married to James Cameron" ZING! Fey and Poeller were great. Laughed at almost every joke.
8:09 - Supporting Actor: Goes to... Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained. Weinstein at work, as always.
8:11 - "The North Star is that one." -Christoph Waltz pointing to Quentin. Happy for Waltz and all, but it's totally a leading role. Could it be down to him and Hoffman for Oscar? Still think it's wide open.
8:25 - Waiting for more film awards. Too much TV nonsense!
8:35 - Salma Hayak and Paul Rudd stare awkwardly into the camera for 15 seconds while the teleprompter is obviously broken. Ha!
8:42 - The real Tony Mendez on stage to present clip of Argo. Nifty little bit of campaigning. Woulda worked better had he been standing a bit closer to the mic.
8:44 - Original Score goes to... Michael Danna for Life of Pi. I think he has an edge in the Oscar race as well.
8:48 - Original Song goes to... Adele and Paul Epworth for Skyfall. Gotta imagine they're leading the Oscar race as well. Charmingly candid acceptance speech. "We've been pissing ourselves laughing!" -Adele on being part of the Hollywood world for a night.
8:56 - Amy and Tina keep popping up as fake nominees! Cute gag. Just don't overdo it, ladies. So far, though, they're killing it. Need more of them on stage.
8:58 - Standing-O for Bill Clinton, presenting clip from Lincoln. Brilliant. Makes the Tony Mendez stunt easily forgotten.
9:03 - Actress in Comedy/Musical goes to... we'll never know, because Will Ferrel and Kristin Wiig are drawing this out soooooo painfully!
9:05 - Here it is: Actress in Comedy/Musical goes to... Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook. A formidable Oscar threat indeed. That movie's gotta win something.
9:06 - "I beat Meryl!" -Jennifer Lawrence's first words on stage. Not a good start. Weepy finale, but speech still ends awkwardly.
9:16 - Supporting Actress goes to... Anne Hathaway in Les Mis. Beautiful tribute to Sally Field in her speech for being a monument against type casting. Classy move, but considering Field is her chief competition for the Oscar, it also reminds people that Field already has two Oscars. All in all, a lovely speech, despite running too long. I don't think anyone can topple her for the Oscar.
9:24 - Screenplay goes to... Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained. Not so surprising given that the Globes are Harvey's playground.
9:34 - Foreign Film goes to... Amour. Haneke accepts, quips that he never thought he'd accept an award in Hollywood from another Austrian, referring to presenter Arnold Schwartzeneger.
9:45 - Animated Film goes to... Brave, after Sacha Baron Cohen made an ass of himself for two minutes. Mark Andrews accepts. Gotta suck for Brenda Chapman. Who's gonna win the Oscar, though? Sooooo wide open.
9:50 - Jason Bateman and some other guy I don't recognize join a long string of presenters who are bombing. Bring back Fey and Poeller!
10:02 - Robert Downey Jr. presenting the Cecil B. DeMille Award to Jodie Foster. She sounds like she's on pep pills with this acceptance speech. Seriously: Mile-a-minute! And ALL over the place. But becomes incredibly poetic and personal near the end. This is a first for me, but I feel the need to listen to it again. Something about it actually feels really important. Weird, but I won't be the only one wanting to take a closer look at this one. Is it a retirement announcement? A plea for love? All that and more?
10:16 - Director goes to... Ben Affleck for Argo. They do like their stars down at the HFPA. This win to go along with the BFCA win has to feel weird given his Oscar snub.
10:31 - Actor in a Comedy/Musical goes to... Hugh Jackman in Les Mis! Woot woot! As great as Bradley Cooper was in SLP, I was really rooting for Jackman. He was a terrific Valjean, and it's super gratifying to see him rewarded for a project worthy of his talents.
10:40 - Best Picture, Comedy/Musical goes to... Les Mis!!! Can I get another "Woot woot"! Guess Harvey can't win 'em all. This may work the haters into a frenzy. Hope they shout themselves hoarse.
10:47 - Actress in a Drama goes to... Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty. Will be a showdown between her and J-Law at SAG Awards. Strong, strong speech that hails Bigelow for defying gender roles in Hollywood. Big Oscar boost there.
10:50 - Actor in a Drama goes to... Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln. Humble speech. Nothing will stop his Oscar march.
Wondering at this point what'll win Best Picture, Drama. Django Unchained, Argo, Lincoln, Life of Pi, and Zero Dark Thirty each have a win (two for Django).
10:57 - Best Picture, Drama goes to... Argo! Clooney, Affleck, and Heslov accept. Despite the Best Director snub by the Academy, I still think we need to consider Argo a legit threat to win the whole thing. It's gonna rake in a lot of #2 and #3 votes.
