My Award nominations: Original Song

Most years I find that I have to grasp at straws a bit in order to find five songs I like enough to justify nominating for Best Original Song. I've only got three down at the moment, but I may flesh it out before announcing my award winners:

UPDATE: So yeah, caught up with Ted recently, and very much dug the song. Nice catch by the Academy's music branch.

“Into the Open Air” from Brave (Alex Mandel):

The acoustic sound of this lyrically relevant second-act montage starts off slow and contemplative, but really lifts off when it takes on virtually percussive effect.

"Song of the Lonely Mountain" from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
(Neil Finn, Janet Roddick, David Donaldson, Stephen Roche, David Long):

A chillingly beautiful theme which sets the tone for a grand adventure to come. Both the version heard in the film (embedded) and Finn's own cover make for a great listen.

“Suddenly” from Les Miserables (Claude-Michel Schonberg, Alain Boublil, Herbert Kretzmer):

Though hardly an earmworm on the level of the original songs, its use in slowing the pace of the first act before we plunge into tumultuous Paris is very effective. A lovely, pleasantly soft addition.

“Skyfall” from Skyfall (Adele Adkins, Paul Epworth):

Cleverly uses the familiar Bond theme music as the bass backbone. The lyrics foreshadow the film's climactic last stand, making this more than just the ear candy that it already is!

"Everybody Needs A Best Friend" from Ted (Walter Murphy, Seth MacFarlane)

MacFarlane fondly remembers the days when films had theme songs whose tunes would permeate the instrumental score and come to define the voice of the movie. He and longtime collaborator Walter Murphy deliver just that was snappy panache.

Just missed: "Learn Me Right" from Brave, "Who Did That to You" from Django Unchained, "Pi's Lullaby" from Life of Pi
