War Horse looking good for both Sound Oscars with win from MPSE

As I expected, it was War Horse that won the Motion Picture Sound Editors' key category of Best Sound Effects and Foley in a Feature Film, a category which has proved itself to be a rather accurate litmus test of which way the Sound Editing Oscar will go for the last five years.

Given the higher match-up rate between the Academy and the MPSE (compared to the lower match-up rate between the Academy and the CAS), I'm going to stick with my theory that this is a better sign for War Horse than the CAS victory was for Hugo, but I could be dead wrong.

Speaking of Hugo, it did manage a win for its only nomination from the MPSE, for Music in a Feature Film, so that may be worth noting if it does end up taking Best Sound Editing from War Horse next Sunday.

Full list of winners (plus some comments) after the cut.

Sound Effects and Foley in a Feature Film: War Horse
I like this win. I thought the sound effects were really first rate. I'm rooting for this to win the Oscar not only because I'm predicting it, but because it's the most deserving nominee as well.

Music in a Feature Film: Hugo
I'd have preferred to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo win this one. Ren Klyce's collaborative manipulation of Reznor and Ross' music is such a huge part of that film's soundtrack.

Dialogue and ADR in a Feature Film: Super 8
This, I don't understand. No offense to Super 8, but I found the Dialogue and ADR to be by far the worst aspect of its sound. Was I the only one who had a hard time understanding what those chattering kids were saying?

Music in a Musical Feature Film: The Muppets
Yay Muppets! There were only four nominees, one of which was Pina, and that's a borderline "musical" anyway. Moral of the story: we need more musicals!

Sound Effects, Foley, Dialogue and ADR in an Animated Film: Tintin
So happy to see this exceptional Oscar-snubbed sound design win something this season.

Sound Effects, Foley, Dialogue, ADR and Music in a Feature Documentary: George Harrison: Living in the Material World

Sound Effects, Foley, Dialogue and ADR in a Feature Foreign Language Film: The Flowers of War
