Many are quick to accuse this film of being overrated sentimental sap, but as far as I'm concerned, few films have captured the essence of imagination as poignantly and affectingly as
Finding Neverland, the tenderly told story of how J.M. Barrie became inspired to write his long-lasting masterwork
Peter Pan.

Johnny Depp is pitch perfect as Barrie, walking a fine line between eccentricity and believability, kind of like the film itself. It's a performance that could easily become creepy, but Depp never misses a step as the playwright and author who drifts effortlessly into the mind of his inner child upon meeting a widow and her four sons (young Freddy Highmore excels as Peter).
What could have been a fairly pedestrian tale is given a truly beautiful magic realism that enchants and enthralls us. The photography and music is deftly employed to ease us into a dreamlike state conducive to the fantasy elements of the story, and the rest is pure magic. Touching, memorable, and fit for all audiences,
Finding Neverland makes a believer out of all who watch it. Don’t forget your hankies!
